St. Louis Seniors Push Up Car Accident Fatality Rate

St. Louis’ senior drivers are more prone to auto accidents than drivers in other age groups, according to a new study by TRIP, a national transportation research group. With the active, mobile Baby Boomer generation reaching retirement age, the number of older drivers on America’s roadways is increasing. Despite a general decrease in traffic fatalities nationally, the number of fatal car accidents involving at drivers age 65 and older is rising.

In 2010, senior drivers were involved in 5,750 traffic fatalities nationwide. According to the TRIP report, 17% of all traffic fatalities are caused by drivers age 65 and older, yet older drivers account for only 8% of total miles driven. As TRIP points out, senior drivers are responsible for a disproportionate number of fatal auto accidents across the country, and older St. Louis drivers are among the worst offenders.

Missouri ranked 17th nationally in the number of traffic fatalities caused by older drivers. In 2010, while only 16% of Missouri drivers were age 65 or older, senior drivers caused 19% of all Missouri traffic fatalities.

Considering the size of the Baby Boomer generation, transportation officials say the problem will only get worse. By 2025, 60% of the U.S. population will be over age 65, including 1 in 5 American drivers. To decrease the over 65 accident rate, TRIP recommends driver education programs for seniors, tougher licensing requirements, more vehicle safety features, roadway safety improvements such as larger signage and wider turn lanes, and expanded public transportation.
