FDA Issues Warning to Pfizer Regarding Contaminated Medications
When you go to the pharmacy to pick up a medication that has been prescribed for you, you generally think nothing of it. You trust that the medicine is going to be clean and free of any kind of contaminants. However, that’s not always the case. Recently, Pfizer, which is one of the largest prescription drug companies in the world, received a warning from the FDA regarding some serious problems with some of their medications.
The FDA cited multiple violations against Pfizer, and one of them was that some of their injectable medications were contaminated with what they called “visible particulates.” Upon closer scrutiny, it was discovered that these particulates were actually cardboard.
The FDA stated that foreign materials like cardboard can pose a significant health risk to patients who use these medications, and the very presence of it within their medications indicate that the plant’s process for manufacturing sterile medications was out of control. This particular warning was sent to Pfizer’s Kansas facility, but it is not the only warning that the company has received. Over the last several years, many of their other facilities have received warnings regarding defective drugs.
