Your Car Accident Settlement – What to Expect Part One
Medical bills, lost wages, and the emotional toll of an auto accident can be overwhelming, and the accident settlement process even more so. Fortunately, the St. Louis personal injury attorneys at Hoffman and Gelfman have you covered, with a short guide on what to expect through the process.
After the Accident
To ensure a successful outcome, law enforcement should be called to the scene of the accident. If the police do not file a report, the driver must file a crash report within 10 days. Get the names and contact information of accident drivers and witnesses. Take pictures of damage to all vehicles, weather and road conditions. Never take responsibility for the accident while speaking with officers/drivers.
Medical Attention
If you’re injured, go directly to the doctor. It’s a good idea to go in either case, as some injuries, such as whiplash, may not be apparent immediately following the accident, and any delay in treatment could devalue your claim.
Contacting Insurance
Missouri is an “at-fault” state, making the at-fault driver legally responsible for property damage, medical costs, and financial loss for all affected parties. Contact your insurance company as soon as possible after the accident to determine your responsibilities, and the steps necessary to successfully file your claim.
