Fungal Meningitis Outbreak Linked to Tainted Steroid Injections
According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention there have been fifteen deaths due to steroidal injections that all came from the same company. The company, the New England Compounding Center in Framingham, Massachusetts, has recalled all of its products and stopped operations. The steroid, methylprednisolone acetate, was given primarily to people who were suffering from back pain. One case was reported by ABC news as being due to an injection to relieve ankle pain.
If you have suspicions about any recent injections the firm of Hoffman & Gelfman advises strongly that you question your physician immediately about what you were given. Meningitis symptoms include headache, neck pain, stiff neck, fever, nausea, redness or swelling at the injection site. These symptoms can take some time to show though so it’s better to question your physician today rather than wait until symptoms begin to appear.
