Senate Looks at use of Psychotropic Drugs for Seniors

A bipartisan sponsored amendment has been submitted as part of The Food and Drug Administration Safety and Innovation Act. This amendment wants to standardize procedures to prove people given psychotropic drugs for reasons other than what they are usually used for are made aware of their risks and side effects.

In the past these drugs have been given to older patients with dementia and Alzheimer’s disease in nursing homes and the results have not been promising. In fact they carry a warning that fatalities may occur among this group of patients and they have not been approved for use by the FDA to modify behavior of those with dementia.

There are many different problems that can be associated with nursing home treatment. Trips and falls that are not properly explained may in fact have been caused by the use of this kind of drug or another drug not properly administered. Our St. Louis nursing home abuse team can help you if you believe a loved one or family friend has been a victim of wrongful treatment or neglect. The St. Louis personal injury attorneys at Hoffman & Gelfman have experience in this area and can help ensure that your loved one is properly compensated in the event of an incident.
